A small hamlet northeast of Black Hawk, Hughesville was founded on the ranch of Patrick Hughes when silver was discovered in the area in 1878. Activity centered on the Hard Money Mine and the Haubrick Brewery. A few houses still exist in the area.

Silver ore was discovered around 1870, and as many as 100 men worked the mines in this area. Hughesville did not have any organized town structure with stores or a post office, but it did have a school.
